A fence built around your home, not just your boundary.
Most fences are an afterthought. At Feature Fences, we’ve spent a decade making sure yours isn’t.

"The fence is the first thing anyone sees. It sets the tone before you've even reached the front door."
About us
Your fence, your feature - crafted with care
Feature Fences was built on a simple belief — that a fence deserves the same care and craft as any other part of your home.
With over a decade of experience in residential construction, we bring a builder's eye to every project. That means understanding how a fence sits with a structure, how materials age, and how the finished result will look from the street on day one and ten years later.
Every fence we build is designed around the property it belongs to, fabricated off-site in our workshop, and installed fully finished. No mess, no extended time on site — just a result that looks exactly like what was agreed from the start.

Our Process
From the first conversation to the finishing touches, here’s exactly what working with Feature Fences looks like.

Step 1 — The Consultation
We start with a conversation. We come to you, walk the section, and listen to what you’re actually after. Whether that’s privacy, street appeal, a style that suits the architecture, or all three. No assumptions, no templates. Just a proper look at your property and an honest discussion about what will work.

Step 2 — Concept & Design
Based on what we’ve heard, we put together a concept drawing so you can see the idea before anything is committed to. We work through it with you, adjust what needs adjusting, and refine until the design feels right. You shouldn’t have to imagine what your fence will look like. We make sure you can see it.

Step 3 — Quote & Booking
Once the design is confirmed, we measure up precisely and present a clear quote. No grey areas, no surprises later. Once approved, we lock in your dates and give you a schedule so you know exactly when work begins and when to expect it done.

Step 4 — Built in Our Workshop
Manufacturing begins off-site. Timber is cut to exact specification, sanded, primed, framed and spray booth painted to a consistent, durable finish. Everything is assembled and inspected before it leaves the workshop. The timber is fully sealed before being exposed to the elements, adding life to your fence. By the time it arrives at your property, it’s already finished.

Step 5 — On-Site Installation
Posts go in first, set correctly for the ground conditions and fence load. The pre-built panels are then assembled on site and what goes up looks like a finished product from the moment it’s in place. Working off-site means your property stays tidy and the install is efficient from start to finish.

Step 6 — The Finishing Touches
The details that separate a good fence from a great one. Post caps fitted, nail and screw holes filled, paint touch-ups applied. We don’t leave until the finish is right, because this is what you’ll look at every day.

Built to Be Noticed
Privacy and security were the brief, but appearance mattered just as much. The owners wanted a fence that worked hard without shouting — something sleek and clean-lined that sat above the garage and across the front of the property. The design was also guided by what already existed out the back of the property, so the new fence kept consistent with the boundary style they had established. The result is a dark, contemporary fence with clean horizontal lines that frames the house rather than overpowers it.
"We loved the sleekness of it. The clean lines were exactly what we were after, and the security aspect was the biggest thing for us. It sits perfectly with the rest of the property."

Something Familiar
A classic picket fence built to suit both the home and the street it sits on. The Berhampore villa called for something traditional in character — a fence that felt like it had always been there rather than something imposed on it. Stepped down the property line with post caps added to break it up and give the design a little more intention. A hedge planted behind softens the boundary further, making the whole frontage feel considered rather than just enclosed.
"It suits the house perfectly. The post caps make it feel considered rather than just standard, and the hedge behind it just ties the whole front together."

A Nod to the Neighbourhood
This property on Pinnacle sits below street level with no fence previously in place — just a brick wall. Privacy was the primary objective, along with blocking the prevailing wind that comes down the hill. The design needed to work from both perspectives: providing a screen for the homeowners below while not looking like a heavy wall to those walking past above. The answer was a sleek, level fence kept to a considered height, with spacing between the boards to keep it light. Clean lines, minimal fuss, exactly what the site called for.
"Privacy was what we needed and that's exactly what we got. It doesn't look heavy from the street, which was important to us. Clean, simple, and does the job perfectly."

The Stepped Boundary
A clean, modern frontage that works with the home rather than against it. The brief was privacy without enclosure, screening the property from the street while keeping the entrance feeling open and considered. The stepped design follows the natural contour of the section, integrating with the landscaping rather than cutting across it. Wide framed posts and evenly spaced horizontal slats give it a crisp architectural quality, while the soft colour palette keeps it light and welcoming. Strong street appeal, a defined boundary, and a timeless result that enhances the property without dominating it.
The stepped design was something we didn't even think to ask for. It just made sense once we saw it.

Framed by Nature
Strong screening for a garden that deserved to be shown off. The property had a striking desert-inspired landscape with cactus and succulent planting, and the brief was to create privacy from neighbouring properties without losing the openness and character of the space. Custom horizontal slats finished in a deep black stain give the fence a clean, modern edge that works as a backdrop rather than a barrier. The horizontal lines draw the eye through the garden while filtered light and airflow keep it from feeling heavy. The result is bold and refined, a dark frame around a considered landscape that now feels cohesive, private, and genuinely resort-like.
The garden looks completely different now. The dark timber makes the plants stand out in a way we never expected.

Bold Against the Green
Modern screening that earns its place in the garden. The brief was privacy without weight — a fence that defined the space without closing it in or competing with the landscaping around it. Vertical slats with even spacing allow light and airflow through while still creating effective screening. The dark stained finish gives it a bold, contemporary edge that sits beautifully against the surrounding greenery rather than fighting it. The result is sleek, functional, and warm — a fence that feels like it was always part of the garden.
It looks like it grew with the garden. Really considered work.

The Deck Screen
Privacy for an exposed deck without losing the feeling of space. The property sat close to neighbouring homes with an open deck area that needed screening, but the brief was clear. It couldn't feel heavy or enclosed. Custom horizontal slats in dark stained timber complement the home's contemporary style while the slim profile keeps light and airflow moving through. Tight detailing, clean lines, and seamless corner transitions give it an architectural quality that lifts the whole outdoor area. The deck now feels sheltered and considered, the landscaping reads better for it, and the fence itself has become a feature rather than just a boundary.
We can finally use the deck properly. It feels like an outdoor room now rather than just an exposed platform.

Where are you based and what areas do you cover?
Feature Fences is based in Wellington and covers the wider Wellington region. Depending on the project, travel further afield may be possible — get in touch and we can discuss your location.
How does the process work?
It starts with a free on-site consultation — we come to you, walk the section, take precise measurements, and listen to what you’re after. From there you’ll receive a clear, itemised quote. Once approved, we design and fabricate your fence panels off-site in our workshop, where they’re also fully painted and finished. On install day the panels arrive ready to go up — no mess, no extended time on site, no disruption to your household. Clean, efficient, and done properly.
Do you offer free quotes?
Yes! The initial on-site consultation and quote are completely free and there's no obligation. You'll know exactly what you're getting before you commit to anything.
What materials do you work with?
Primarily hardwood timber — treated pine, cedar, and similar species depending on the look and longevity you’re after. We also work with powder-coated steel framing, Corten steel accents, and mixed material combinations. All materials are selected for how they age in the New Zealand climate.
Can I stay home while the fence is being installed?
Absolutely. Install day is designed to be as low-disruption as possible. The team arrives with everything prepped and ready — the panels go up efficiently and the site is left clean.
How do I get started?
Just get in touch. Call or email and we’ll arrange a time to come out to site. No forms, no call centres — just a straightforward conversation.
